Grill’d, Macquarie Park

A con­ver­sa­tion com­par­ing some recent bur­gers we’d enjoyed led D and me to con­clude that Burger Fuel makes our favour­ite bur­gers and also led us back to Grill’d. This time we’re headed for the store at Macquarie Centre.

The new steak bur­gers entice me and I try the High Steaks ($16.90) made with 100% grass fed scotch fil­let, crispy bacon, aged ched­dar, free range egg, smoked sea salt, cos lettuce, tomato, rel­ish and her­bed mayo.

This is one mon­ster of a bur­ger that I had trouble get­ting my mouth around to taste all the ingredi­ents in a single bite. D has a much lar­ger mouth and just man­aged! But for the few bites where I did get all the innards at once, they were deli­cious. The steak is cooked to medi­um rare, juicy and tender, while the bacon is smoky with crispy edges. The fried egg could’ve been a bit more sunny-side up, but added a soft­ness to the bur­ger, while the cheese brought rich­ness and the salad and mayo added fresh­ness. All in all, a deli­cious bur­ger!

D tries anoth­er new­ish bur­ger on their menu, Black with the Lot ($13.90) with black crumb chick­en schnitzel, crispy bacon, tasty cheese, sour cream, baby cos, tomato and sweet chilli mayo.

The black crumb is visu­ally dra­mat­ic but doesn’t bring much fla­vour to the schnitzel oth­er than a gen­er­al bland­ness, as you’d expect from activ­ated char­coal foods. That said, the schnitzel was juicy and the smoky bacon and cheese added the rich­ness of fla­vour lost from the black crumb. Overall, it’s a tasty bur­ger but noth­ing but won’t have us return­ing.

Finally, we fin­ish with some Our Famous Grill’d Chips (reg­u­lar, $4.80) of thick-cut chips sprinkled with our sig­na­ture herb mix. We enjoyed the herb mix but the chips were soft and soggy and could’ve used a bit longer in the fry­er for a crisper skin.

Macquarie Centre is slowly com­ing into its own in terms of din­ing options, but the qual­ity of the food and ser­vice tends to lack the fin­esse of more estab­lished branches of chain res­taur­ants loc­ated else­where.
