Nelson Pear and Manuka Honey in Milk Chocolate is a second flavour in Whittaker’s Artisan Collection. To ensure top-quality products, Whittaker’s is a ‘bean-to-bar’ manufacturer. This bar uses their ‘5 roll refined creamy milk chocolate’, mixing it with ‘pieces of Nelson grown pears and a hint of naturally harvested Manuka honey from Mossop’s Honey of Tauranga’. Pears grown in Nelson, a city on the South Island of New Zealand are known for their succulent qualities, while Manuka honey is touted as having anti-bacterial properties.
A sweet fruity note escapes on the packaging for this chocolate. The first taste, though, is a creamy milk chocolate, which quickly melts to expose the generous chewy pieces of Nelson pear soaked in Manuka honey. The pear pieces provide an interesting textural contrast to the smoothness of the milk chocolate, although I wouldn’t be able identify pear as the fruit used without the packaging, which is the case with many fruit flavoured cocoa-based chocolates.
Overall, it’s a very sweet chocolate experience from first bite through to the aftertaste. The intense sweetness of honey together with the natural sweetness of pears where the cocoa content of the chocolate is rather low (33%) creates a sweet-on-sweet-on-sweet experience without the much needed relief found in the bitter notes of darker chocolates.
This bar of Nelson Pear and Manuka Honey in Milk Chocolate by Whittaker’s was 100 grams. It was produced in New Zealand and gifted by family visiting from Auckland, New Zealand in 2016.
