Bourke Street Bakery is a Sydney institution. But I’d never been until late 2015. They’d opened their Broadway location just as I started at Sydney University, but I wasn’t interested before I changed universities and courses. And then when I returned to the area to work after finishing university, the Broadway location was long closed. I’d walked past their Parramatta location before, but it was so late in the afternoon that their shelves were empty.
I chanced upon their original location on Bourke Street in Surry Hills, and they’d still had some white chocolate, passionfruit & meringue tarts ($5.50) available. As luck would have it, it’s probably the item on their menu I’d most wanted to try.
Isn’t the tart just beautiful? The white chocolate and passionfruit curd was deliciously tangy and sweet and generously filled to the top of the tart case, while the pastry was thin and crispy — none of the curd had made the pastry soggy nor had they lined the base with white chocolate to stop seepage. The meringue top was blow torched to perfection, although not as marshmallowy as the one at Blacksmith Cafe & Bakery.
I must come back to Bourke Street Bakery to try their other baked goodies!
Bourke Street Bakery is located at 633 Bourke St, Surry Hills NSW 2010.
