Purple Sweet Potato Kitkat by Nestle Japan

Purple col­oured foods aren’t the most famil­i­ar. I can think of three off the top of my head: red cab­bage, egg­plant (although that’s just the skin), and purple sweet potato. I’m not a fan of cab­bage, but I do love egg­plant and purple sweet potato. Purple sweet potato has a starchi­er tex­ture and more flor­al fla­vour than the orange and yel­low sweet pota­toes, which I find more enjoyable.

This Beni-Imo KiKat, or purple sweet potato, has the fla­vour of the purple sweet pota­toes fam­ous in the Okinawa, and is the lim­ited edi­tion for Okinawa and the nearby Kyushu island of Japan. It fea­tures mauve col­oured and purple sweet potato-flavored milk chocol­ate enrob­ing wafers.

This Purple Sweet Potato KitKat is, like most of the lim­ited edi­tion KitKats, very sweet. The starchi­er tex­ture of the purple sweet potato lends itself well to being trans­lated into a chocol­ate, and the sweet flor­al notes comes through pleas­antly as the dom­in­at­ing fla­vour. The fla­vour of purple sweet potato is all in the taste of this KitKat, which is unlike KitKats (for example, rum and rais­in) where your sense of smell must com­plete the flavour.

The box of Purple Sweet Potato KitKat con­tained 12 mini bars. It is a lim­ited edi­tion for the regions of Okinawa and Kyushu, and was man­u­factured in Japan and pur­chased in Tokyo, Japan in 2014.
