Purple coloured foods aren’t the most familiar. I can think of three off the top of my head: red cabbage, eggplant (although that’s just the skin), and purple sweet potato. I’m not a fan of cabbage, but I do love eggplant and purple sweet potato. Purple sweet potato has a starchier texture and more floral flavour than the orange and yellow sweet potatoes, which I find more enjoyable.
This Beni-Imo KiKat, or purple sweet potato, has the flavour of the purple sweet potatoes famous in the Okinawa, and is the limited edition for Okinawa and the nearby Kyushu island of Japan. It features mauve coloured and purple sweet potato-flavored milk chocolate enrobing wafers.
This Purple Sweet Potato KitKat is, like most of the limited edition KitKats, very sweet. The starchier texture of the purple sweet potato lends itself well to being translated into a chocolate, and the sweet floral notes comes through pleasantly as the dominating flavour. The flavour of purple sweet potato is all in the taste of this KitKat, which is unlike KitKats (for example, rum and raisin) where your sense of smell must complete the flavour.
The box of Purple Sweet Potato KitKat contained 12 mini bars. It is a limited edition for the regions of Okinawa and Kyushu, and was manufactured in Japan and purchased in Tokyo, Japan in 2014.
