La Mamma del Gelato Anita, Chippendale

I’m not usu­ally one to try creamy fla­vours of gelato. I usu­ally eat gelato as a dessert when I’m out with friends after lunch. And my sub­con­scious has always reminded me that it’s silly to try to eat some­thing heavy right after lunch. Except this one time at La Mama del Gelato Anita.

This cup is a scoop of tiram­isu and a scoop of fer­rero rosh­er chocol­ate (a half-hearted attempt to bypass trade­mark issues?) gelato.

The fer­rero rosh­er chocol­ate gelato was, as I recalled from my taste test from a pre­vi­ous vis­it, amaz­ing. It tasted just like a Ferrero Rocher chocol­ate, com­plete with the crunchy wafer bits. The only thing miss­ing was the hazel­nut at the centre of all Ferrero Rocher chocol­ates. But that’s okay because the taste of hazel­nuts was cer­tainly there. That’s also prob­ably because they used Nutella — they had jars of it that were big­ger than the size of your head behind the counter.

The tiram­isu gelato was less impress­ive — the hint of alco­hol in it didn’t taste like the rum or irish cream that I was used to, so it ended up throw­ing my tastebuds off. I’ve had tiram­isu gelato with hunts of soaked lady fin­gers in it, too, so I was a bit dis­ap­poin­ted that this gelato lacked any vari­ation in tex­ture. I prob­ably won’t go back for this.

Also, if you ever have gelato right after lunch and find your­self com­pelled to eat a creamy fla­vour, choose only one! Or bet­ter yet, just don’t, and go for the fruity fla­vours. It’ll save you from the drowsi­ness of an after lunch food coma when you need to be productive.
