La Mamma del Gelato Anita, Chippendale

I’m not usually one to try creamy flavours of gelato. I usually eat gelato as a dessert when I’m out with friends after lunch. And my subconscious has always reminded me that it’s silly to try to eat something heavy right after lunch. Except this one time at La Mama del Gelato Anita.

This cup is a scoop of tiramisu and a scoop of ferrero rosher chocolate (a half-hearted attempt to bypass trademark issues?) gelato.

The ferrero rosher chocolate gelato was, as I recalled from my taste test from a previous visit, amazing. It tasted just like a Ferrero Rocher chocolate, complete with the crunchy wafer bits. The only thing missing was the hazelnut at the centre of all Ferrero Rocher chocolates. But that’s okay because the taste of hazelnuts was certainly there. That’s also probably because they used Nutella — they had jars of it that were bigger than the size of your head behind the counter.

The tiramisu gelato was less impressive — the hint of alcohol in it didn’t taste like the rum or irish cream that I was used to, so it ended up throwing my tastebuds off. I’ve had tiramisu gelato with hunts of soaked lady fingers in it, too, so I was a bit disappointed that this gelato lacked any variation in texture. I probably won’t go back for this.

Also, if you ever have gelato right after lunch and find yourself compelled to eat a creamy flavour, choose only one! Or better yet, just don’t, and go for the fruity flavours. It’ll save you from the drowsiness of an after lunch food coma when you need to be productive.

La Mama del Gelato Anita is located at Central Park, Ground Floor RG15, 28 Broadway, Chippendale NSW 2008.
